Long-term pain relief outcomes

When considering an interventional procedure for joint or spinal pain, a primary concern for most patients is the duration of the results.

If you’re choosing private medical care to avoid the wait times of the public system, you want to understand whether the treatment may provide a sustainable improvement in your quality of life.

At Clinically Managed Injections (CMI), we aim to be transparent about long-term outcomes for pain relief. Because every patient’s anatomy and condition are different, there is no single “expiry date” for an injection.

Instead, we look at clinical averages and the specific factors that influence how long your relief might last.

Understanding Durability by Treatment Type

The longevity of a procedure depends heavily on the medication used and the area being treated. Here is a look at what our physicians typically observe in a clinical setting.

Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory medications used for conditions like “flares” in the hip, knee, or shoulder.

  • Observed Timeline: Many patients experience a significant reduction in symptoms for 3 to 6 months.
  • Clinical Note: These injections reduce local inflammation. However, if the joint has significant structural wear, the inflammation may eventually return as you resume normal activities.

Viscosupplementation (Hyaluronic Acid)

This treatment is designed for knee osteoarthritis. It adds a lubricating fluid to the joint to help with shock absorption.

  • Observed Timeline: In responsive patients, relief often lasts between 6 and 12 months.
  • Clinical Note: This procedure is generally more effective in cases of mild to moderate arthritis. For advanced “bone-on-bone” cases, the duration of relief is often shorter.

rthrosamid

Arthrosamid is a non-biodegradable hydrogel injection designed for knee osteoarthritis. It helps cushion the knee joint and is often used for advanced, bone-on-bone osteoarthritis when patients want a non-surgical option.

  • Observed Timeline: In responsive patients, relief may last 5 years or more.
  • Clinical Note: Arthrosamid is different from hyaluronic acid because it does not break down in the same way over time. It may be an option for people with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis, including bone-on-bone cases.

Spine and Sacroiliac Injections

Spine-related injections or SI joint injections target specific nerve roots or joints in the pelvis and back.

  • Observed Timeline: Relief can vary from several weeks to many months.
  • Clinical Note: These procedures are often used to provide a period of improved comfort, allowing the patient to progress with physical therapy and core stabilization.

Factors That Influence Long-Term Pain Relief Outcomes

While clinical averages provide a baseline, several individual factors will determine your specific result.

1. The Stage of the Condition

Injections are typically most durable when the underlying joint or tissue damage is in the early-to-mid stages. In very advanced cases, the joint’s physical environment may limit the duration of any medication’s effectiveness.

2. Follow-up Rehabilitation

Patients who use the period of reduced pain to engage in specialized physical therapy often see more favourable long-term pain relief outcomes. Strengthening the muscles that support a joint reduces the mechanical stress that causes inflammation in the first place.

3. Accuracy of the Injection

Medication must be delivered to the specific site of the inflammation to be effective. At CMI, we do not perform “landmark-based” injections by feel.

Our physicians use real-time imaging (ultrasound or fluoroscopy) to visualize the anatomy. This approach supports the accuracy of the placement.

Managing Chronic Conditions Over Time

It is helpful to view injection therapy as a specialized tool for managing a chronic condition.

If a patient finds that the duration of relief is getting shorter with each treatment, our subspecialty-trained physicians will re-evaluate the plan. This may involve looking at other treatments or discussing whether it is time for a surgical consultation.

Common Questions About Treatment Longevity

1. How often can I safely repeat a corticosteroid injection?

To protect joint tissue health, we generally recommend no more than 3 or 4 corticosteroid injections per year at a single site. Your physician will monitor your response to ensure this remains the right path for you.

2. Why did my neighbor’s injection last longer than mine?

Pain is highly individual. Differences in activity levels, the location of tissue damage, and overall health can affect how the body responds to medication.

3. Does my activity level after the procedure matter?

Yes. While we want you to remain active, returning to high-impact sports too quickly can sometimes lead to inflammation returning sooner. We usually suggest a gradual return to activity.

4. What happens if the relief only lasts a few weeks?

If a precisely placed injection provides only short-term relief, it serves as a “diagnostic signal.” It suggests that the inflammation is very high or that the pain may be coming from a different source, which helps us refine your next treatment step.

5. Can I do anything to make the injection last longer?

Focusing on low-impact strengthening exercises and following your physiotherapist’s advice is the most reliable way to support the longevity of the treatment.

6. Is it normal for the pain to return slowly?

Yes. As the medication is naturally absorbed and processed by your body, you may notice a gradual return of your previous symptoms. This is a common part of managing a long-term condition.
