Arthrosamid® Knee Injections Pain Treatment

A Non-Surgical Option for Chronic Knee Osteoarthritis

At CMI, we are proud to offer Arthrosamid®, an innovative, long-acting injectable treatment for chronic knee osteoarthritis. Arthrosamid is designed for patients who continue to experience knee pain and stiffness despite physiotherapy, medications, or traditional injections—and who wish to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery.

This treatment is delivered by our board-certified interventional pain specialists using image-guided injection techniques to ensure precision, safety, and optimal outcomes.

Arthrosamid® is a non-biodegradable hydrogel injection specifically developed for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis pain. Unlike corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections, Arthrosamid integrates into the knee joint tissues, providing durable mechanical support and long-lasting pain relief.

Once injected, the hydrogel stabilizes within the synovial tissue of the knee, helping to reduce inflammation-related pain while preserving joint function.

Key features:

  • Long-lasting, non-degradable hydrogel

  • Single injection treatment

  • Designed specifically for knee osteoarthritis

  • Does not interfere with future surgical options

How Arthrosamid® Works

Arthrosamid acts by creating a supportive cushioning effect within the knee joint. Rather than breaking down over weeks or months, the hydrogel remains stable, helping to:

  • Reduce chronic knee pain

  • Improve joint comfort during daily activities

  • Enhance mobility and function

  • Minimize the need for repeated injections

Clinical studies have shown sustained pain relief and functional improvement lasting up to several years for many patients.

Who May Benefit from Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid may be an excellent option if you: – Have moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis – Continue to experience pain despite physiotherapy or medications – Have had limited or short-lived relief from steroid or gel injections – Are not ready for knee replacement surgery – Want a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment.

A consultation with our CMI specialists will determine whether Arthrosamid is appropriate for your specific condition.

The CMI Advantage

At CMI, knee injections are not performed blindly. Every Arthrosamid injection is:

  • Image-guided (ultrasound or fluoroscopy)

  • Performed by experienced interventional pain physicians

  • Completed in a sterile, accredited medical facility

  • Designed to maximize accuracy, comfort, and safety

Our clinic is focused exclusively on image-guided pain interventions, allowing us to provide highly specialized care with minimal wait times.

What to Expect on Treatment Day

  • The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes

  • Local anesthetic is used for comfort

  • Arthrosamid is injected directly into the knee joint under imaging guidance

  • Most patients walk out of the clinic the same day

  • Return to normal activities is usually rapid, with minimal downtime

Pain relief may begin gradually over weeks as the hydrogel integrates into the joint tissues.

Safety and Considerations

Arthrosamid is CE-marked and has been used internationally with a strong safety profile. As with any injection, potential risks include temporary pain, swelling, or stiffness. Serious complications are rare when the procedure is performed using image guidance by experienced physicians.

Our team will review risks, benefits, and alternatives in detail during your consultation.

F.A.Q.

CMI on West Broadway in Vancouver is one of the few Canadian clinics offering Arthrosamid (polyacrylamide hydrogel) knee injections. The procedure is performed by interventional pain specialists under ultrasound guidance. A physician referral is required. Contact CMI to confirm eligibility.

Yes. Arthrosamid is a single-injection, non-surgical treatment for knee osteoarthritis. It is injected directly into the knee joint where it integrates with the existing synovial fluid, providing lasting cushioning and pain relief without the need for surgery or repeat injections.

Arthrosamid has been studied in multiple peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials demonstrating significant and durable reductions in knee pain for patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. CMI maintains a dedicated clinical evidence page on its website with summaries of the key published research.

As of current available information, Arthrosamid holds CE Mark approval in Europe and is available in Canada, but FDA approval for the United States has not yet been confirmed. Patients in the US seeking Arthrosamid injections may need to travel to an approved Canadian clinic such as CMI.

Clinical studies have shown that Arthrosamid generally provides sustained pain relief and improved knee function for  2 to 5 years. However, in some cases, it reduced the pain completely. Unlike corticosteroids, Arthrosamid remains integrated in the joint and continues providing cushioning over time.

Arthrosamid is recommended for patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis who have not achieved adequate relief from physiotherapy, oral medications, or previous corticosteroid injections, and who are not yet candidates for total knee replacement.

Arthrosamid is a private pay procedure and is not covered under BC MSP. Contact CMI directly for current pricing. Some extended health benefit plans may offer partial reimbursement depending on your policy.
